NYC Starter Jobs Down 37% - Maybe Try Your Young Dreams Somewhere Else

My mother cried when she visited me in the firetrap where I was bunking in New York City. For me, a starter writer, it was heavenly austerity. I gloried in having to skip meals. 

And, like so many creatives back then I did make it, at least according to the adjusted metrics for success for those in the arts. We got it that we would never be Wall Street material. That career held up for 40+ years. Then there was severe glut with a side dish of burnout. Then AI. 

Currently, as a career coach, I dash the dreams of the youth (and talk straight to their parents) considering heading out to New York City to launch a career. Bloomberg seconded that today. It documented that in the past few years starter jobs had plunged 37%. 

Meanwhile, there are fewer firetraps to bunk in. The average rent for a studio apartment is $3,630. Since surrounding areas have gentrified there really is nowhere to pursue a life of poverty-with-a-purpose. 

The direction I recommend is to explore opportunities in non-coastal smaller cities, especially among smaller businesses, as well as starting your own micro enterprises. 

The average rent for a studio apartment in Toledo, Ohio is between $676 and $679. There are plenty of "hiring" signs. The plum jobs are made known through word-of-mouth. So, grab a survival gig, settle in, network and you could be on your way.

The opportunities for startups are plentiful. It's like the old days: Just have an idea and hustle. A young client is moving toward investing in a mobile service for pet grooming. The trick is getting funding. My tarot reading service is doing better here than it had in the southwest. 

Glam. Cool. Buzzy. Perhaps that's been eliminated for most of youth. Instead the new kind of journey is stark realism about what can be built.  

Success is a mental game. Failure comes from being done in by the “committee” in your head.

Monitor postings on Reddit subunits focused on careers and it's no longer news that PhDs, both newly minted and those already in the labor market, generally are finding the credential an obstacle in the search for a job or even contract assignments. Epstein Files: People We Don't Like, Including Kathryn Ruemmler.

 T hose getting the brunt of the bad publicity and even loss of titles (like Leon Black and Larry Summers) because of the Epstein connection could be taking such a hit because of this simple reality: We don't like them. Across sectors, likability is the survival platform. On that list on unlikables could be added top lawyer at Goldman Sachs Kathryn Ruemmler. The Wall Street Journal just published a very long-form analysis of her relationship with the late disgraced pedophile.  Internally, she could be on thin ice: "The extent of their relationship has drawn scrutiny inside Goldman Sachs, where the 54-year-old lawyer is general counsel and a top adviser to CEO David Solomon."  Those who can decode corporatespeak point to the red flags in sizing up her chance of holding onto her job.
