Scandal and Kristin Cabot: Is There Still a Double Standard?

Two from Astronomer were caught on camera kissing during a Coldplay concert. Both were married to someone else and it was a boss/subordinate situation. They were CEO Andy Byron and HR executive Kristin Cabot. Both stepped down last July.

Since then, Cabot shared on an Oprah podcast, she has been unable to get another job. And she needs one. However, Byron had had promising activity on his own job search.

When there is a corporate scandal, is there still a double standard? We all know that at one time it was standard when an inappropriate romance was uncovered, the woman was the one to leave the job. The man stayed on, unless there were ethical considerations such as abuse of power or favoritism.

Could that still be the way it goes?

I'm not sure.

In the Epstein files scandals both males and females have been punished severely. There will probably be no coming back for Larry Summers and Leon Black. The same could hold for Kathy Ruemmler and former Harvard humanities professor (and wife of Summers) Elisa New.

Could it be that non-gender reasons are the obstacles in Cabot's hunt for employment?

At the top of the list is the AI factor. That technology is transforming HR. IBM, for example, announced that AI has taken over  94 percent of HR tasks. Cabot is at a disadvantage in having been out of the loop for so long. AI is developing so fast. What AI tools does she have down cold?

That gap itself in a work history is a major negative. Did she try to fill it up with temp work, gigs, pro bono coaching and so on?

Also were her knowledge base and skills that good or did she get to be an executive because of an unfair advantage?

How is she comporting herself on interviews? So much has changed in what employers want to pick up during those.

In short, Cabot might not be work-ready.

As a coach, I recommend that she grab any job to bring in immediate income, restore confidence and provide perspective on what else she might do to return to earn a good living. Eventually her best bet might be to set up a business. Succeed in that and much will be forgotten.

Success is a mental game. Failure comes from being done in by the “committee” in your head.

Together, we liberate your thinking. Then we change your story. And, unleash success. Meanwhile, we focus on bringing in income. That puts you in a position of strength.
