Those are outcomes. And that's what the humans doing the six to seven second look at a resume need to see. Otherwise they won't continue with the review. That focus on outcomes should not only be detailed in the Professional Experience section. It also needs to be frontloaded in the Summary. No one cares that you are passionate and hardworking.
When you make it to the interview, hold much of the personality. The charm offensive is five years ago. Sure, present yourself as poised, confident and energetic. But the points to be made are what results you can achieve for that particular employer and how. Do enough research to customize the "sales" pitch. And that's what a job interview is: your best shot at selling.
Should you offer to work a few days for free to confirm your ability to get things done? That's controversial. But it can be effective.
After the academic market crashed and non-academic employers assessed I had "wasted" time with all that and therefore wasn't very marketable, I asked for the opportunity to labor for free. That would be until they developed a good enough sense of me to make a decision about hiring. One took up on the offer but with the twist that I would be paid. As usually happens: Work brought better work. I got to sample several career paths before settling in.
A few of my clients also applied that test-me-out strategy. In all cases it panned out.
The job market is not necessarily a disaster. A more productive mindset is that in 2026 it's different from what you've experienced before. Be prepared to reset all factors in your search.
However, not all of this is new.
At the high end such as elite law firms, the key metrics for assessing and rewarding performance have been for years measurable results. For instance, several years ago at Paul, Weiss Brad Karp created off-season bonuses for the "committed." That was code for those with unusually high hours billed. What is new is that the showcase-the-outcomes/hold-the-earnestness has become universal throughout the labor market.
