Glam, Nobility of Violent Social Action: Luigi Mangione, Daniel Moreno-Gama and Likely More
Agreed, currently capitalism is downright toxic. Predictably there would be a "hero" like Luigi Mangione who allegedly took action against it. That alleged offing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson resonated. Who doesn't live in high angst about a medical bill wiping them out. Most personal bankruptcies happen that way.
Now we have Daniel Moreno-Gama, another young man with a cause we can certainly identify with. As The Wall Street Journal documents:
" ... Texas college student named Daniel Moreno-Gama was charged with attempted murder and arson as part of an alleged attack on OpenAI chief executive Altman’s home ... He was carrying an anti-AI manifesto ..."
Moreno-Gama could also take on the aura of being exactly on the side of right. For that, he has been willing to sacrifice his own future. To more and more, those in the AI box are the bad guys.
Among the tipping points about this technology, from being regarded with awe to terror that the end is near, are the issues associated with Mythos. It could detect vulnerabilities, hack and in the process destroy civilization. We already knew that AI bots could have a mean streak. Already, they have their own social platform Moltbook on which the bots can organize collective action. In addition, what about the whole sectors like content-creation and accounting being significantly downsized by AI.
Probable, not only possible, is a mass social uprising.
There had been some of that during the late 1960s counterculture, especially on university campuses. And some of that did turn violent. For instance, bank windows in Ann Arbor, Michigan, home of the University of Michigan, were smashed. A dark extension of that were the Mason murders.
Later, as technology became the matter of existential concern, we got the Unabomber. Although not quite the hero, there was the glam of living off the grid in order to be able to focus on "the cause." Why couldn't more of us become so one-dimensional in order to achieve a goal? If I sold my house on the Gold Coast of Connecticut and relocated to a no-frills cabin in Ohio would I be able to write a novel with depth?
For a while, those with wealth, power and influence, ranging from Microsoft founder Bill Gates to Paul, Weiss partner Brad Karp, had been able to achieve righting of social wrongs through programs and pro bono work. Society seemed satisfied. There was trust in the system. Activists such as those shooting public leaders weren't hailed as heroes.
That was then. In the now, business leaders have beefed up their personal security. Tech cities like San Francisco are on edge.
Obviously, you could make a name for yourself by crossing the line from peaceful protest to violence. That could evolve into a common objective as so many in this K-economy feel invisible, debating whether to buy groceries or put gas in the car and maybe never being able to find a job.
In my intuitive coaching and tarot reading, those with jobs are riddled with fear. Not only could they lose them but what about increasing property taxes and, yes, the cost of a medical emergency not fully covered by health insurance. The latter accelerates the Mangione ethos.
The haves and have-mores should research the dynamics of the counterculture. Judgment was binary: You were an agent for change, willing to risk it all, or one of the bad guys. At the very least the bad guys were shamed. Gleefully, the counterculture front lines watched them cringe.
