Differentiation, Reputation Rehab Through Generative AI: Not Only Big Law
That safe elite model of how a law firm should look, walk, talk and bill is fragmenting. To remain competitive law firms of all sizes, even the 300+ lawyer one, have to customize a provocative identity showcasing how it's leveraging generative AI.
That's what we have confirmed for us since Kirkland & Ellis announced it
" ... and Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: PLTR) ... announced the launch of a proprietary enterprise platform designed to transform private equity fundraising."
Among smaller players Vorys in Ohio has developed "AI Twins" for almost 20 partners. Those platforms simulate partners' patterns of strategy, stylistics and more. Associates accessing them reduce the back-and-forth with those partners. The next on this, I posit, is that such platforms would be open for subscriptions and licensing. Yes, the law firm develops a new kind of profit center.
Bloomberg Law's Roy Strom provides plenty of details on how generative AI is proving itself a force differentiating law firms. He observes:
"The race to deploy generative artificial intelligence is
ripping up that playbook [that is, following the herd and being in lockstep]. And it’s in large part because law firm leaders are
now facing a novel question. The one luxury they have? Everybody knows that
nobody knows the right answer. It’s a recipe for experimentation."
That last term "experimentation" says it all.
Firms not experimenting will be left behind. It doesn't matter so much how the K&E venture with Palantir will pan out. Right now what counts is that it is piloting a fresh idea about how to leverage AI.
Smart law firm leaders who need to rebrand should be connecting the dots on this: Loop in the AI innovation. That's the story. And it could distract from or even bury earlier narratives.
At Paul, Weiss, chair Scott Barshay can accelerate reputational rehab from the dealmaking with the Trump administration and the residue of the Epstein fallout by setting in play bold AI try-outs. In 2025, it had partnered with Harvey to customize a workflow tool. Now, push forward much more boldly, investing chunks of its war chest in generative AI pilots. Genius strategist Brad Karp could head structuring those. He had overseen the Harvey venture.
In coaching, I guide clients in how to stand out. Getting, holding and moving on to better professional opportunities entail giving off star wattage. In a sense the labor market has become binary: stars and those non-twinklers vulnerable to being shut out.
