Tabloids Run with Watchtell Kissyface Story: The Junior Partner Who Didn't Know His Place

 M&A legal powerhouse Wachtell has taken on some hilarious reputational baggage. So far, it's not unraveling its business. But a good time is being had by all as tabloid media milk the story of Nathaniel Cullerton's very public kissyface encounter with a subordinate. My, my, such a seeming abuse of power.

The New York Post and the Daily Mail are juicing the narrative which had been primarily an inside-legal-sector shock bit of gossip. Here was a junior partner, who should have been still a low-profile suck-up grinder, being so passionate on a park bench that the video-taker chastised him to "get a room."

But the story broke out to the general public when it was disclosed that this partner 1) was slated to lateral to a plum position at Gibson Dunn and 2) was sidelined by the park-bench scandal. 

Now, both Wachtell and Cullerton have become tabloid fare. 

According to one run-through by ChatGPT Wachtell will hold up in client assignments, despite this and despite partner flight. But, in conversations with legal players the future for Cullerton doesn't seem so rosy. He's a joke. You don't want that in your gravitas law firm. You don't want that for your lawyer. 

Currently Cullerton is on a leave as Wachtell investigates. Since he already had one foot out the door he is not in a position to be treated compassionately.

America Not Hiring in 2026: Back to Golden Age of Solopreneurs?

 For hiring, 2025 was a brutal year to search for a job. The Wall Street Journal reports that 2026 could be worse: "At a gathering of CEOs in Midtown Manhattan this month organized by the Yale School of Management, 66% of leaders surveyed said they planned to either fire workers or maintain the size of their existing teams next year. Scott Barshay's Leadership at Paul, Weiss Torpedoed, PR Nothing But a Joke, Sympathy for Brad Karp

  Last week was a bad, gone worse and worse, one for law firm Wachtell.   This week starts out as what could upend the new leadership of Scott Barshay (The Decider) at Paul, Weiss.  Today's very long-form article in The New York Times  by Michael Schmidt and Jessica Silver-Greenberg depicts Barshay negatively. Understatement. He is rolled out as one-dimensionally power-driven, abrasive, divisive and downright naive about the power of the media. About the latter, he blew off any concern about the media's response to the law firm's removing from the website the Center to Combat Hate.  An example of the beating delivered Barshay? Here is the NYT coverage of the response by some at Paul, Weiss when Barshay was hired: "But there was unease among some at Paul Weiss.
