SUE! Leon Black Lives Our Get-the-Bast**ds Fantasy

Sure, chat bots like ChatGPT make it easier for non-lawyers to file a lawsuit (pro se litigation). And recently, more have. Those filings have surged from 20,000 a year to 40,000 in federal courts.

But, come on. Our fantasy life of how to get the bast**ds usually plays out in a bigger more glam more sexy context. We want the kind of legal representation that financial founder Leon Black has had and continues with. The brandname law firms have ranged from Paul, Weiss to today's Hogan Lovells.

Bloomberg Law reports:

"Hogan lawyers filed a lawsuit for Black Thursday morning, asking a judge to halt congressional demands that the former Apollo Global Management CEO provide documents and testimony as part of their investigation into Epstein ..."

The case is "Black v House Oversight Committee, et al." Here is the complaint.

Black, who walked out of the last House Oversight Committee meeting, is having none of it. 

Maybe because he can afford the star-lawyer representation that is a tool he frequently turns to in dealing with grievances. That included "Black v Ganieva" with allegations of defamation. Although it was tossed it did generate a lot of media attention. Black, as so many of us wish for our own laments about injustice, got heard in the court of public opinion. 

Today's filing also dominates the news cycle. Black has taken on government in a sophisticated way few can afford to do. Is he a kind of hero in these politically confusing times?

In coaching, I guide clients how to be a "Karen." That is, report wrongs to those who can resolve them. Actually, that kind of intervention can be amazingly effective. No lawsuit needed. But also there's no fun.

Careers. Forget all that. It’s about earning a good living, no matter what.

America Not Hiring in 2026: Back to Golden Age of Solopreneurs?

 For hiring, 2025 was a brutal year to search for a job. The Wall Street Journal reports that 2026 could be worse: "At a gathering of CEOs in Midtown Manhattan this month organized by the Yale School of Management, 66% of leaders surveyed said they planned to either fire workers or maintain the size of their existing teams next year. Only a third indicated they planned to hire." The WSJ adds that pullback from adding manpower could be temporary. Scott Barshay's Leadership at Paul, Weiss Torpedoed, PR Nothing But a Joke, Sympathy for Brad Karp

  Last week was a bad, gone worse and worse, one for law firm Wachtell.   This week starts out as what could upend the new leadership of Scott Barshay (The Decider) at Paul, Weiss.  Today's very long-form article in The New York Times  by Michael Schmidt and Jessica Silver-Greenberg depicts Barshay negatively. Understatement. He is rolled out as one-dimensionally power-driven, abrasive, divisive and downright naive about the power of the media. About the latter, he blew off any concern about the media's response to the law firm's removing from the website the Center to Combat Hate.  An example of the beating delivered Barshay? Here is the NYT coverage of the response by some at Paul, Weiss when Barshay was hired: "But there was unease among some at Paul Weiss. Partners and associates learned from lawyers at Cravath that some people there were not unhappy to see Mr. Barshay go. His ego made him difficult to work with, the Paul Weiss lawyers were told."
