Consumed With Work, Then The Unthinkable: Steve Barrett, Brad Karp And More
In the chaotic 21st century, the rhythm is work. Those adept at time management might be able to steal away moments for snippets of a life. The extreme form is 996 - a concept imported from China, the workday schedule is from 9 AM to 9 PM, 6 days a week.
Then, the unthinkable. That is a medical crisis. That sort of thing doesn't happen to us, right.
Good health is a status symbol. The successful, the privileged, the youthful - we blow all that health stuff off. Until we get caught in that convoluted web of human realities known as a "serious medical problem."
In this YouTube and article, PR Week editorial director Steve Barrett tells about weeks of drifting between life and death last summer. His special message to males is: Submit to those health checkups. Along with that is, even in this era of 100-year life spans, is the warning that life is short.
In a podcast with New York Order Paul, Weiss law partner Brad Karp recounts his heart attack. That was January 2025.
To the surprise of many who follow the career of this never-unplugged SuperLawyer, Karp concedes that bypassing the usual need to sleep might have to be rethought. For decades, among his clients for his nine-figure book of business his signature has been requiring only snatches of sleep. Karp also notes that the cardiac event triggered other lessons. Since the guy is introspective, we can assume they were many.
And in this Substack I admit to a stroke in 2024, which I had kept under wraps.
There I was tooling my way on the highways from east coast to Arizona. In the latter, I had a new contract to do tarot readings at the Mercedes of spiritual centers.
A loss of consciousness. Had the car not tumbled into a marsh all would have been over. It was Rolla, Missouri. A former New Yorker, I asked the medical staff in the ER: Is this a real hospital? Not since I joined a 12-step program in 1981 to stop drinking had I had a more profound psychic shift.
Those experiences, along with the tarot readings I provide, hammer the shock of the loss of control. And the need to figure out how to navigate that unthinkable.
The how is symbolized by The Chariot card in the tarot deck.
In tarot readings I refer to that card as the "Sacred Pause." We get it that we're in a whatever we can't control. Best to take our hands off the steering wheel. Halt. Refrain from strategy. Resisting will only consume resources, such as personal energy and hope, with no positive outcome. Observe. Paradoxically, help usually will be on the way.
Not only are encounters with a health crisis traumatic in themselves. They are expensive. And disruptive. So, no, we don't wish them on anyone. However, since they're commonplace with our aging population, how can we help those going through them pay full attention to the lessons? Those, of course, include ourselves.
