  Does being a lawyer respected by Am Law 100 lawyers entail working in-person in a trophy building in a major metro area? The Reduction-in-Force will likely continue through 2023 and maybe beyond. Talent - Smirk That means the glut of talent keeps ballooning. During the pandemic the concept of "talent" had been buzzy. Sectors, be they tech or professional services such as finance and law, kept chasing it. And, at the time, that began transforming the management-labor social contract. Power was shifting to the latter. More recently, professional anonymous networks chronicle how employers again have the upper hand. If you are part of the glut, you have to rethink how you go about earning a good living. Meanwhile your industry is showing you no mercy.   Some experience those professional anonymous networks such as Reddit and Fishbowl (much like Alcoholics Anonymous) as therapy.  No wonder. They get to bear witness to so much pain. And that is exactly what could be wrong with those professional platforms as well as with AA (about the latter, read  The Atlantic 2015 article  detailing AA's supposed gigantic flaws).   For example on Reddit Jobs the postings tend to be about employees and contract workers being "squeezed" by businesses.  On Fishbowl Consulting, despite the relatively high compensation, most of those brandname consulting firms are positioned and packaged as ruthlessly exploitative of those talented analysts.  And on Reddit Big Law the memes are about higher-ups who are dead ringers for evil characters from the novels of Charles Dickens. Most of the replies to that posting in the large law-firm sector are thumbs-down.  There are even two mentions of influencers during law school days who kept it up after they got a "grown-up" job. Within a year they had lost that good job in Big Law. There may or may not be any correlation with the social postings and getting the boot. The reason for the termination could be simply unsatisfactory performance practicing law that hadn't been related to a social identity. I would add that being a brandname influencer can upstage senior associates, partners, and chairpersons. That's likely not smart at a Cravath, Paul Weiss, Latham, and Wilmer Hale. Actually, those in manual occupations such as construction have a higher rate than those in power career slots. Annually more than 12 million contempate suicide, more than 3 million have created plans how to accomplish the act, and more than 2 million have actually made an attempt. And as  Axion  documents job security in those career paths is increasingly wobbly. Challenger, Gray & Christmas reports that so far this year there have been 3,000 layoffs. Many more are expected. Things look lousy way into 2023. After that, the sector might be permanently downsized. Those forced out probably will have to reinvent themselves. We career coaches know that is not easy and there are no guarantees that it will pan out.
