Auto Tariffs, HHH RIF, Uptick in Lateral Hiring Push Paul Weiss Off Digital Front Page

Thursday, March 27th might go down in the Paul Weiss memory bank as the blessed day it was no longer the hot news.  It has been pushed off the digital front page as well as on professional anonymous networks Reddit and Fishbowl by other shock developments. They are the 25% auto tariff and massive Reduction in Force at HHH.  In addition, young lawyers who felt uncomfortable working at Paul Weiss or participating in its recruiting efforts now know that they have a place to go. The lateral market, lousy for two years, increased 14% recently. However, a sign that once fresh and fun Abovethelaw is no longer fresh or fun is that today it still showcases two attacks on Paul Weiss, one a text piece, another a podcast. On Substack I detail the decline of ATL. Essentially Reddit has overtaken its territory.  A Gen Z entrepreneur might pitch to Brad Karp custom-made tee shirts to be delivered in April 2025. They would be imprinted with: March 2025. Over. The oldest adage in busin...

So, What's Going on at AbovetheLaw and Why Is It Pounding Paul Weiss?

Once fresh and fun legal tabloid Abovethelaw.com seemed to have gotten stuck in gotcha. Here we are. Day after day ATL been pounding law firm Paul Weiss for saving over 2,000 jobs by dealmaking with the Trump administration. In contrast other media such as The New York Times, Bloomberg and Law.com have been presenting this surreal story objectively. Is what’s driving ATL’s one-dimensional coverage a chase after page views? After all, the whole Paul Weiss gestalt is sticky. Here is my analysis on Substack what might be going on with ATL. Are You Among the 3.9 Million Off to College?

College enrollment has peaked. 3.9 million human beings are entering college. Probably excited, with a heavy side dish of fear. But what will happen to them? Since many will have to earn a living the question is: How can they pro-actively structure those four years to align with the brutal law of supply and demand in the labor market? No, that doesn’t rule out abstract learning. But neither a society nor its youth can “afford” ignoring the now-necessary correlation between education and professional marketability. I have plenty to say about this on today's  Substack  column. Have to change? As your intuitive career coach/tarot reader I guide you in transitions. Paul Weiss Can't Catch a PR Break, Skadden Brand Also In-Play - Eventually, That Can Eat into the Business

The problem for Paul Weiss is a public relations one. Eventually that could eat into the business. But, right now, The New York Times reports today in yet another very long-form article: "So far, Paul Weiss appears not to have lost any partners or big clients." Not only is The Times still at it with coverage of the mess Paul Weiss is in post-dealmaking with the Trump Administration. So are influential Bloomberg Law , the professional anonymous networks such as Reddit  and many more. Want to boost page views for your site? Post on Paul Weiss.  As I hammer in Substack , Paul Weiss needs to take radical action to exit this force field.  Meanwhile, there's intensifying championing of former Skadden associate Rachel Cohen who's one of the leaders of the "resistance." To be aligned with her values she quit that good job at Skadden. She and her specific approach to activism have taken on an aura. Incidentally, there's even more bad publicity for Skadden. Its ...

All Is Not Lost: Not for Brad Karp, Not for Paul Weiss

Charismatic, smart, well-connected and good-looking, Brad Karp had been Paul Weiss. Now everything is in play. That’s because of the drama associated with the deal he made with the Trump administration. However, total salvation is possible. In this Substack column I introduce several strategies to return both Karp and Paul Weiss to a golden age. Have to change? As your intuitive career coach/tarot reader I guide you in transitions. PR 101: Paul Weiss Needs to Change the Conversation

The fallout from Paul Weiss' deal with the Trump administration is turning out to be sticky. Just about all the coverage on the administration's actions associated with the US legal system discusses the law firm's decision to negotiate instead of filing a lawsuit like Perkins Coie. In many circles that has proved to be unpopular.  Those focused on clickbait, that is page views, likes, comments and reposts, know they have a good thing going. They aren't going to let up on chatter about Paul Weiss. The basic public relations solution is to change the conversation.  The classic success story in that is the saga of disgraced Wall Streeter Michael Milken. Post prison he created a new narrative through his philanthropy.  More recently Megyn Kelly deflected attention from bombing in broadcast television by launching her own podcast, featuring an iconoclastic tone.  Co-founder of financial powerhouse Apollo Leon Black might have screwed up by making the new story about lawsu...
